Essay 3

All Joy and No Fun

In the article of All Joy and No Fun by Jennifer Senior she talks about how being a parent has its emotionally negative feelings. Their is a discussion about a "research that shows how parents are not happier than their childless peers, and in many cases are less so". I believe every parent has their own opinions on how they feel about being a parent themselves. I don't believe that most people assume that having children will make them happier, I believe everyone has a different point of view. In the beginning of the article It seems like she has an attitude towards being a parent. A study shows that mothers are less happy than fathers.

It is true what most of the researchers believe that not always will children bring you happiness, sometimes it is frustrating and it brings anxiety or heartbreak. That's why parenting may be regarded as less fun than being with friends or baking a cake. But as much as a parent gets frustrated with their child, you also feel how much love you have for them also. Professor Mathew P. White and Paul Dolan use studies that take into consideration how rewarding parenting is, sometimes the results tend to be diffrerent. They asked participants to rate their daily activities in terms of pleasure and in terms of rewarding. Out of the three pleasures child play was chosen third.

Throughout the article I disagree with Jennifer Senior that parenting brings on negative feelings. I can tell you from my opinion thay it does get stressful sometimes, but I would never feel unhappiness with bringing a life into the world. Also I do agree that it is harder for fathers who are seperated from the mother to cope because they aren't with their child as much as they would like to. One fact is that being a parent should be the most rewarding thing ever. More rewarding than anything else.
